Ambassador Shrimati Meera Shankar's visit to Mahatma Gandhi Statue
Her Excellency Meera Shankar, Bharat ’s Ambassador to USA , was given a warm “Texas Size” welcome at the Mahatma Gandhi Statue in Hermann Park at 1:15 PM on Friday, July 31, 2009. Several guests, including the Consulate General of Bharat , Shri Sanjiv Arora and representatives of Houston ’s Mahatma Gandhi Library, and Houston ’s Indo-American community attended the ceremony.
Ambassador Shankar spoke about the values shared by both India and the United States and expressed her gratitude to those South Asian Americans who support and facilitate Gandhi ji ’s mission. "We are very appreciative of the support of the Indo-American Community in the effort for Peace and Non-Violence and I deeply appreciate it.” She also stressed the importance of friendship and cooperation between India and the United States.
The ceremony concluded with Mrs. Shankar paying her tribute to the beloved Bapu by placing a garland on the statue. Mahatma Gandhi’s spiritual message turned into a song was read in unison by all attendees. “I can see in the midst of death, life persists. I can see in the midst of darkness light persists. I can see in the midst of untruth the truth persists. . . To believe in God one must believe in impossible. “The Law of Truth and Love”. Even Indra Bhagawan blessed the ceremony by soaking all present with much needed rains!
