1000 Lights for Peace
October 3, 2010 Miller Outdoor Theater
A project to create a higher awareness of the inspiring life and work of Mahatma Gandhi
and continue his legacy of Truth, Non-Violence, Love, Service and Peace. The contest is
open to all children in the greater Houston area. The winners of these citywide contests
will be recognized at celebration of Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday - 1000 Lights For Peace,
October 3, 2010.
Mahatma Gandhi Week Contests
Creative Writing / Essay Contest: Essays must be typed, 12-point and double spaced with
word count typed at the bottom. Entries must be enclosed in a report cover with attached Entry
Form. No late entries will be considered. Essays may be mailed to Mahatma Gandhi Library. For

Poster Contest: Express your self artistically on a poster by drawing, coloring, sketching, write
a poem, write a prose to describe the topic. All posters must be completed in the presence of a
MGL representative and within 2 hours. All supplies are provided. For more information please

iTribute Contest: In a maximum of 10 minutes (ages 11 & up) or 5 minutes (ages 10 & below)
in multimedia format present the respective topic. No late entries will be considered. All Entries
must be accompanied by Entry Form. All the multimedia content must be embedded on disc and
mailed to Mahatma Gandhi Library. For more information please email Rajan Chawla at

Debate Contest: Participation by organizations only with two team members. No individual
participation is allowed. The team will consist of 2 members, one ‘for’ and the other ‘against’ the
topic of the debate. Each speaker will be allotted 3 minutes to present opening arguments in the
first round. Each speaker will have 1 more minute for rebuttal in the second and the final round.

Speech Contest: In a maximum of 3 minutes present a talk on the respective topic. The talks
will be judged on content, presentation style and delivery by a panel of judges. Winners will also
present their talk at the annual “1000 Lights for Peace” celebration. For more information please
